Meet the Designer: Sarah Gercke Cyr

"I’ve always loved fashion, finding new designers, trying new styles. It’s such an awesome way of expression. Style can mean so many different things, it’s not wearing a designer label head to toe, it’s finding pieces and styles that make you feel good and confident."

About Gray Aspen:
Sarah Gercke Cyr created Gray drawing inspiration from her home here in Aspen, Colorado. She features luxurious fabrics, classic designs, and pieces perfect for life in the mountains.
Can you tell us the story behind Gray Aspen?
I launched Gray in 2008 after having The Gallerie, my retail store, for 3 years. I found a pattern maker in NYC through a fellow designer, Hunter Bell, and sourced my first fabrics at Mood Fabrics. I started with 3 styles! I remember I cried when someone bought my first piece. I had always dreamed of designing, yet never attended fashion school, and I just sort of found my way.
How did you get started in design?
My mom always told me ever since I was little, she would find little outfits all over the house from when I would change. I’ve always loved fashion, finding new designers, trying new styles. It’s such an awesome way of expression. Style can mean so many different things, it’s not wearing a designer label head to toe, it’s finding pieces and styles that make you feel good and confident.
What do you love most about your career?
I really love fabrics, colors, and coming up with new designs. I never know when something new will pop in my head, a lot of times it's when I’m on a run. Sharing what I love and seeing people gravitate towards my pieces will always be so meaningful to me!
How do you stay inspired?
Staying healthy with running, biking and yoga! I love to sweat every day, it’s so cleansing for me and always helps me to feel centered and creative.
Do you have any rituals or routines you swear by?
Working out first thing in the morning. Yoga 3x a week and now starting to incorporate O2 sculpt in too :) I love my banana blueberry smoothie. Lots of water. Laughter!!!! So very important. Lots of sleep and I love my glass of wine here and there. Life is to be enjoyed. It’s easy to get caught up in the stress and chaos. Learning to let that go and trust has been life-changing for me.
What do you love most about Aspen in the summer?
The long days! Cool mornings and evenings. Kids are out of school and we can goof off. It’s a juggle but so fun.
How do you stay well?
Gratitude, spending time with my family and closest friends, working, exercising, and lots of laughing!
What are a few of your favorite experiences at O2?
I have loved getting back into a rhythm with classes. I enjoy so many different teachers and challenging myself with different levels of classes. I used to be all vinyasa flow, now I attend O2 Power Flow, O2 Sculpt, and O2 Yin. The other week, a friend and I came to the Logan Hollowell trunk show and found the most amazing necklaces (we got the same ones - little round gold charms that say 11:11), and then went to a 5:30 O2 Sculpt class with Michelle. Honestly, might still be sore! It was such a fun night. And always love shopping for new goodies in the store after.
What are you wearing these days?
Yoga - love my super soft Alo pants and anything from Monrow. I’m digging their tie-dye pieces.
Every day - Obviously I’m a sweater girl so I’m always pairing my lightweight Gray Aspen cashmere with a flowy skirt and my stan smiths. Life is busy! I love effortless and easy looks.
